SAfm presenter Profile Songezo Mabece

Songezo was born and raised in Sada, in the Hewu district, in the former Ciskei (now Eastern Cape), near Komani.  He spent his formative years in East London as a border at Selborne Primary and College schools, until matriculating in 2002.

For tertiary education he attended at the University of Fort Hare, where he graduated with a bachelor of laws (LLB) degree.  It was also in these years that he distinguished himself as a champion debater, where he and partner (Nqobile Bhengu) twice made the finals of the 2007 and 2008 Southern Afrikan Universities Debating Championships. Songezo, for his part, won the English Second Language best speaker prize at the 2007 finals.  He further holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in International Trade Law from Stellenbosch University (2017); the General Management Program - an executive development course - from the IEDC Bled School of Management in Slovenia (2016); and a certificate in competition law from the University of Cape Town.

In 2010, Songezo started his professional career in Cape Town where he enrolled for articles at a top law firm. From there he started an internship at a non-profit that focuses on international trade law in Stellenbosch, whereafter he returned to practise labour law in Cape Town, until the end of 2013.  Whilst based in Cape Town, Songezo had a brief stint at 567 Cape Talk (simulcast with Talk Radio 702), as a talk show host and with Supersport as a soccer commentator, after placing second in the national commentator search (Goalmouth).

In 2014, he assumed a position as a Law Clerk at the Constitutional Court in the chambers of Justices Skweyiya, Madlanga and Leeuw.  Whereafter (2015) his career ventured into competition law at the Competition Commission (Commission), in Tshwane.  There, Songezo is a Legal Counsel and he currently serves as Executive Assistant and Legal Researcher to the Commissioner.  He has previously filled roles in the Health Market Inquiry and ran litigation cases on behalf of the Commission.

Whilst at the Commission, Songezo interrupted his services in 2017/18 to register for an LLM (Government Procurement Law) at the George Washington University Law School, in Washington DC (final results awaited).  It was during this period of study that he simultaneously secured a short term consultancy position at the World Bank (Development Economics Desk) Head Quarters in Washington DC, focusing on public contracts (procurement).

Songezo is an avid sports fan and, especially, a serious rugby referee with the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, who has previously been invited to the South Afrikan Rugby Referees Academy.

Songezo is thoroughly comfortable sharing the stage with statesmen and stateswomen, business people and politicians as a moderator, facilitator, panellist and master of ceremonies.  This he has done countless times at the Thabo Mbeki Foundation; the World Economic Forum (for Afrika), the Black Management Forum; GW Law School Alumni Conference on Government Contracts; and numerous other public-sector conferences in the country.
