More on Karen Key

Based in Cape Town, married to Peter, a Quantity Surveyor, and with the privilege of having a son, Nicholas, who is a teacher, a freelance journalist, photographer, videographer and editor

I currently work as a freelance presenter/researcher/producer for SAfm. Until recently I also worked doing research/production in television and research/writing for a diverse range of publications.

The Media, and Radio in particular, has been my passion from my earliest days and I have been fortunate enough to spend most of my life doing what I love best.  In radio, I worked my way up from a Secretary to a Producer and now a Presenter.  I have produced a range of programmes which included lifestyle magazine shows, “access” radio programmes such as Microphone-In and legal and health shows.  As a presenter, I have also been fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to do shows dealing with subjects close to my heart.  I have presented a range of programmes and currently I am presenting the health programmes “Health Matters” and “Health Update” and “The Disability Report”, a travel and tourism programme, “Time to Travel”, as well as “The Law Report”.  I have worked in both commercial as well as public broadcasting environments, having spent 4 years as a Specialist Producer for 567 Cape Talk.

Over the years I have worked as a sub-editor, researcher, writer and editor of the Cape Town Tourism Visitor’s Guide, the Western Cape Tourism Board’s Official Travel Guide and as a contributing writer to a number of publications including the book “Cape of Flames” which was published as a reminder of the Great Fire of January 2000 in Cape Town.  In 2000 I extended my repertoire into print and have worked as a Contributing Writer to the book “Cape of Flames”, the Western Cape Trade & Tourism Guide (2001-2003), SA City Life magazine as a monthly contributor and occasional features writer and as a Contributing Writer for Icon magazine (Pam Golding publication).  In 2001 I joined the team as a Researcher for the Cape Town Tourism Visitor’s Guide and was involved with the Guide for five years, the last three as Editor.  In 2003 I was appointed, by Kwela Press & the SABC, as Editor for the book “Woman Today : A Celebration”.

I ventured into television for a while and worked as a Production Co-ordinator and Researcher for Carte Blanche on M-Net as well as Programme Co-ordinator for “The Cosmo Show” for M-Net and as Production Manager for the Afrikaans lifestyles programme “Pasella” on SABC2. I believe in passing on the baton, and to this end, spend time mentoring recently graduated students wanting to make their way into the media and in particular the world of freelancing.

As a person living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) (for 23 years, so far – and doing really well) I take time out to speak to people about being positive in the face of adversity and find myself invited to chat to groups of people about the power of positive thought.
