Kutlwano Masote started out in radio in 1999, presenting a daily local content classical music programme on Classic fm. He subsequently became head music at that station in 2010. In 2012 he joined SAfm, compiling and presenting classical music shows on weekends. Upon his return to Classic fm in 2018, he hosted a lifestyle show and later the breakfast show in 2019. His twenty-five years as a professional classical music practitioner, combined with his radio experience, have shaped his trademark informative classical music presentations.

Masote is also one of South Africa’s most sought-after orchestra conductors. He has conducted concerts across the genres of opera, symphonic, jazz and other popular music. His passion for bringing diverse musical traditions together is evidenced in orchestrations of the music of hip-hop artists Kwesta, Khuli Chana and Kabomo, as well as Maleh, Lira and Sibongile Khumalo. Other musicians he has conducted in concert include Elvis Blue, Mac McKenzie and Brazilian music icon Gilberto GilAs a conductor he has worked with the Johannesburg Philharmonic, the KZN Philharmonic, the Free State Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Johannesburg and the Philharmonia Moments Musicaux of Taiwan.

In 2015 and 2016 Kutlwano was nominated for Naledi Theatre Awards in the category Best Composer for music he wrote for Agreed and Masote’s Dream respectively. He has been commissioned to write corporate ID tunes for Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator (2017), the Blue Blazer Theme for the Africa Polo Open (2016), The Lebone Song for the annual Kgosi EPL Memorial Lecture (2017). He also composed jingles for the SABC’s new Takalani Sesame series of 2020.
