More on Ike Phaahla

Ike Phaahla has been a presenter for the past twenty years , both for Television and Radio. He started presenting Jazz music programmes on the radio in 1998 on Metro FM . The programme had a tremendous following of around 60thousand listeners as it was broadcast on Sunday Mornings. During his stay at MetroFM he hosted a number of live Outside Broadcasts at the  North Sea International Jazz festival in the Hague , Netherlands. He also initiated the monthly live broadcasts from the M2 studios of the SABC featuring Abdullah Ibrahim , Paul Hanmer, Gloria Bosman and Sibongile Khumalo. The recordings are still kept at the SABC archives and were broadcast live. He left Metro in 2001 to join the Current Affairs team at SAfm.

While at News and Current Affairs he was asked to sit in on the Best of Jazz and soon took over the programme from Nothemba Madumo. His stay at SAFM has seen him hosting the Standard Bank Jazz Series , promoted by T Musicman  as compere at their main stage as well as facilitating their press conferences. He also went on to host the Cape Town International Jazz Festival Press Briefings with their International and local Stars and is a regular at most live performances around the country. He also travels to Grahamstown for the annual Standard Bank Jazz Festivals, doubling up as compere and presenting live shows to SAfm listeners.

Ike is particularly known for giving South African artists a lot of support by making sure that their music is played on air. His reputation amongst them is phenomenal and he’s also been involved in staging shows that featured Sibongile Khumalo , the late Sipho Gumede, Moses Taiwa Molelekwa  , Idris Hotep Galeta among others. He was also MC at the memorial services of  most of the departed artists.

He is a longtime judge of the South African Music Awards in the traditional Jazz category and is involved in the promotion of South African Jazz to music schools.  The Best of Jazz is currently the most listened to Jazz show in the country even though it’s on Fri and Sat night , competing with TV and other  attractions.

Besides presenting The Best ofJazz, Ike also stands in for Siki Mgabadeli or Mmasechaba Moshoeshoe on their respective shows when they’re not available, showing his versatility as a well rounded broadcaster. He can discuss anything from politics to comedy . He is an integral part of the SAfm team.
