Date: May 30, 2017

Shops belonging to foreign nationals in KwaMashu have been vandalised and looted following rumours of child kidnappings.

The situation is relatively calm in KwaMashu hostel and surrounding areas north of Durban.

This after locals went on a rampage last night and attacked and looted shops owned by foreign nationals after rumours that foreign nationals had orchestrated a wave of child kidnappings in the township were circulated on social media platforms.

The looting resulted in some major roads being closed in KwaMashu throughout the night.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal had dismissed these allegations and labelled it as fake news. Currently police are visible monitoring the situation.

Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Police spokesperson Colonel Thulani Zwane.

In KwaMashu hostel dwellers are looking at the destroyed shops. Public transport is operating normally ferrying commuters to their various destinations.
