Fred Brownell, the designer of South Africa's first democratic flag, passed away at his home in Pretoria on Friday. He died at the age of 79. The flag was adopted on the twenty-seventh of April 1994, during the country's first democratic general election, to replace the flag that had been used since 1928. The new national flag was chosen as a symbol of South Africa's new democracy. Recently the Equality Court had been hearing arguments around the call to ban the old South African flag. The Nelson Mandela Foundation wants the apartheid era flag banned and declared unconstitutional. Meanwhile Afrikaner lobby group Afriforum is opposing the Foundation's application.
