The sale of all live chickens has been banned across the country. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has put the suspension after avian influenza was detected in a farm in Mpumalanga last week.
All affected birds in that farm have since been euthanized. Three weeks ago there was a highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in Zimbabwe which led to South Africa suspending all trade in chickens from Zimbabwe.
Bongi Gwala speaks to Dr Mpho Maja, Director of Animal Health at the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
