The June 16 commemorations recognise the role of young people in the fight against apartheid.
In 1976 learners, some as young as the panellist in the children’s panellist hosted by Sakina Kamwendo on SAfm on Youth Day, took part in the protests against Bantu Education and the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of teaching in schools.
In fact, Hector Pieterson was only 12 when he was shot during the Soweto Uprising which triggered a nationwide protest amongst young people against the apartheid system.
Unlike the Youth of ’76, the opinionated and unadulterated panelist on the Forum@8 are born frees- never experience oppression or segregation.
