Tafelberg, social housing or NOT

Date: May 4, 2017

Western Cape Human Settlement MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela says calls for social housing in inner city is legitimate one, but NOT Tafelberg

The Forum@8 this focuses on the issue of the Tafelberg site in Sea Point in Cape Town which the Western Cape government wants sell for R135 million to raise funds for a new office block for the Department of Education.

Western Cape MEC for Human Settlement Bonginkosi Madikizela says calls for inner city development are legitimate however; the land at Tafelberg is NOT earmarked for low cost housing. Speaking to Sakina Kamwendo during the #AMLive’s Forum@8 discussion Madikizela said there were other sites in Water Front and Newlands that are earmarked for housing in the province.

Madikizela was responding to allegations by NGO Reclaim the City’s Joanne Louw allegations that the Western Cape government is kicking out the poor domestic workers out of the City.

Louw who is the Treasurer at Reclaim the City has lived in Sea Point for 30 years. She says in the years she’s been there people who work in the inner City are NOT part of the city and are forced to travel to and from the City every day.

NGOs Reclaim the City and Ndifuna Ukwazi are opposing the sale, adding that where vested interests of public assets flourish, the space for ordinary people to participate, influence decisions and hold their elected officials to account narrows.
