uThukela District Mayor defends Maiden Bursary

Date: Jan 27, 2016

Bursaries for virgins sparks debate at uThukela District Municipality in Kwa-Zulu Natal

The Maidens Bursary Award introduced during their recent Mayoral Matric Excellence Awards, is given to girls for being virgins.
There is a condition though, that in order to keep their bursaries, the maidens will have to undergo regular check-up during holidays. If they lose their virginity, then the bursary gets taken away.

While some see this, as an invasion of their privacy, others believe the bursaries encourage young girls to stay pure and focus on their education.

On the Forum@8 AM Live Anchor Sakina Kamwendo asks; whether the Maiden's Bursary Award a noble incentive, or an infringement on young women's rights to dignity? Our guests are the Mayor of the UThukela District Municipality in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Researcher on gender and cultural issues Nomboniso Gasa and Honorary Research Professor Durban University of Technology Nceba Gqaleni.
