Rules of Parliament under the spotlight
The rules for members of Parliament have once again come under the spotlight. This is after recent events of ANC Members of Parliament boycotting a parliamentary committee, because it is chaired by Dr Makhosi Khoza. These committees are where the real work is done. How MP's fare in attendance can have an impact on the committees effectiveness.
We look at what sanctions are meted out when MPs are absent from meetings, if don't abide by the rules of parliament, if the do not declare gifts and financial interests, among others. Last year, the deadline for submission of annual disclosure had to be extended, after 55 MP's could not submit their information on time. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Public Service Accountability Monitor's Zukiswa Kota; Wits University's Professor Daryl Glaser and social commentator, Jacob Molapisi.
