Marikana miners struggle with wounds 5 years on

Date: Aug 18, 2017

44 people including 34 mineworkers, two police officers and security guards were killed in August during the unprotected wage strike with workers

It is five years since police used live ammunition, to suppress a strike by mineworkers at one of South Africa's biggest platinum mines. The Lonmin mineworkers had been on an unprotected strike to demand better wages and working conditions. Six days into the strike, police shot and killed 34 mineworkers and wounded 70 others. Ten other people had been gunned down in the days leading up to the tragedy. It has been described as a single most incident in which the security forces used the most lethal force against civilians, since 1960. Amnesty International has bemoaned what it says is a lack of prosecutions for the killings.

On the Forum@8 Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Marikana shooting survivor, Mzoxolo Magidwana; lawyer for Marikana miners, Adv Andries Nkome and Lonmin's Wendy Tlou.
