The African Christian Democratic Party has proposed in parliament an amendment of the current termination of pregnancy act. It says women who decide on an abortion after 12 weeks, must first receive an ultra-sound and counselling. According to the party, the aim is to protect and provide a safety nset to women at a very difficult time.
A study conducted by the global reproductive health group Marie Stopes International has found that 58% of the estimated 260 000 abortions that take place in South Africa every year are illegal. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to ACDP member of the National Assembly, Cheryllyn Dudley
