THE DISABILITY REPORT

ARI SEIRLIS, National Director of the QuadPara Association of South Africa, spoke about on-going negotiations with the LOC regarding requirements for the disabled at the 2010 stadia around the country.  He also spoke about all wheelchair users travelling through the ACSA Terminals of O.R. Tambo International, King Shaka International and Cape Town International airports during the 2010 World Cup sho will be greeted with a gift of a wheelchair repair toolkit and the Rolling Inspiration magazine.

CAROLINE RULE, Occupational Therapist who also specialises in driver rehabilitation, spoke about a new project called “Driving Ambitions” which will be based Zwartkops race track.  The programme will use driving instructors specially trained to teach people with disabilities to drive or how to adapt their driving style.  Long term goals include opening a specialised licensing department that just caters for people with disabilities.

She also spoke about the use of gaming consoles like Wii, Nintendo and X-box in assisting both quads and para’s with rehabilitation therapy.

THULI MATLALA, herself a paraplegic, talks about her first column in Rolling Inspiration magazine in which she deals with “attitude” – her own and that of other people.  She also talks about girls and women of all ages, and with any form of disability, being among the most vulnerable and marginalized of society.

MADALEIN GREYLING, Fundraising and PR Programme Manager for the South African National Council for the Blind, talks about the ground breaking service for visually impaired spectators attending World Cup games.  FIFA, the Swiss National Association for the Blind and the South African National Council for the Blind have teamed up to provide an Audio Description Project at 44 matches in six of the 2010 FIFA World Cup stadiums.  There will be specially allocated tickets at the stadia.  It is hoped that this will form part of the World Cup Legacy in that this service will continue in SA for soccer as well as for other sports events.

MOIRA GERSZT, Chief Operating Officer for the Smile Foundation, talks about 2010 being the Foundation’s 10th anniversary which will be commemorated by the hosting of a unique 2010 Smile Week between 7 and 11 June when more than 50 children will be given the ability to smile.  The Foundation transforms the lives of disadvantaged children suffering from facial disfiguration. Funding is coming in the form of auctions of 32 giant wooden soccer boots, one for each of the 32 participating teams and painted in their national flag colours, and signed by various VIP’s.  The South African boot will be handed over to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.
